ViewTag LLC Formed, Digital Luggage Tags for Air Travel

Vanguard ID Systems has formed a limited liability company, ViewTag LLC, a separate product company that helps air travelers check their bag at home to avoid busy kiosks and track it throughout the airport handling process using an airlines app to limit lost and mishandling bags. ViewTag is a permanent, electronic alternative to paper-based bag tags that securely attaches to your luggage.

In 2017, 4.05 billion people traveled by air and is growing at a pace of 0.5 billion people a year. In the same year, 4.65 billion bags were checked, averaging 1.15 bags checked per ticket sold. Despite the increase in air travel, lost and mishandled bags have become a thorn for passengers, airlines, and airports.

According to the 2017 SITA 2017 Baggage Report, 23 million mishandled bags were reported worldwide. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) Resolution 753 for Baggage Tracking required airlines in June 2018 to reduce mishandling by implementing cross-industry tracking for every baggage journey.

ViewTag is part of an emerging Electronic Bag Tag (EBT) market, which started when Vanguard ID Systems hosted the first consortium on EBTs at its West Chester, Pennsylvania headquarters. This brought together the IATA and representatives from 16 airlines. ViewTag helped set the standard by forming tight collaborations with its airline partners and the IATA—meeting baggage requirements for future travel with the FAA, FCC/CE, ICAO, and TSA.
