What You Need to Know About RFID for Access Control

RFID access control systems are essential to protect your organization, assets, and sensitive information.  These systems enable more streamlined management, regardless of the scale or nature of your organization, enhancing efficiency and security.

What is RFID access control?

Radio frequency identification (RFID) uses radio waves to identify people or objects and transfers data between a reader and an RFID tag. By utilizing this technology, RFID access control systems offer a means to manage building access effectively.

How does RFID access control technology work?

RFID tags: Tags, ID badges, or cards are embedded with an RFID chip inlay that contains unique identifying information.

Antennas: Antennas receive signals from the RFID tags and transmit them to the RFID reader.

RFID reader: This device reads the information stored on the RFID tags and sends it to the access control system to allow authorization.

When someone presents their RFID card, ID badge, or key fob to an RFID-enabled door, the reader initiates a signal to the tag. Next, the tag transmits its distinct identifying information to the reader. The reader then forwards this data to the door lock access control system, which decides to allow or restrict access depending on the authorization data saved in the system. This entire contactless process takes place in a split second.

What are the advantages of RFID access control systems?

Security: Radio frequency identification technology provides a high level of security and data encryption.

Convenience: These systems are designed to allow users to access designated areas quickly and easily.

Customization: Vanguard ID Systems offers a fully customized experience. Choose different sizes, shapes, and inlays to meet your organization’s needs.

RFID vs NFC

RFID and NFC technologies provide convenient contactless access control solutions. The key distinction between the two is that NFC is commonly associated with smartphones and smartwatches, enabling communication with access control readers. NFC operates within a short range, while RFID offers a much longer range for access control.

What industry could benefit most from RFID technology?

All organizations, regardless of their size, can take advantage of this technology. Access control systems can range from basic to elaborate, depending on each organization’s specific needs. It can be used solely to grant access to a building from the outside without needing a key or used throughout an organization where specified authorization is required.

Access control systems can be used by:

  • Property managers and building owners
  • Laboratories
  • Schools and universities
  • Government
  • Gym and fitness clubs
  • Hospitals and doctor’s offices
